Cancelliere Wins His Second WOTM Award of the Season!
Glasgow Warriors winger and Warrior Nation fan favourite, Sebastian Cancelliere, has won the McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month award for January 2023.
This is the second time this season that the Argentinian flyer has scooped the monthly accolade, previously having collected it in November.
Cancelliere wins this award having earned 82% of the fan vote.
His on-field statistics also back up the impressive month he’s had, currently appearing in six of the United Rugby Championship’s eight season-wide players stats.
He leads clean breaks with 18, and defenders beaten with 30. Metres gained he is second, with 654m, only to Scarlets’ Johnny McNicholl who has 765m. He’s joint-third in offloads, with 14, along with Edinburgh’s Hamish Watson, and Connacht’s Mack Hansen. He’s also joint-third in the leading try scorer ranking, with seven, alongside Connacht’s Caolin Blade and Leinster’s Rob Russell. Finally, Cancelliere and Ulster’s Stuart McCloskey have an equal number of successful carries, in fourth place, with 56 carries each.
In January, Cancelliere added four tries to his season tally of nine. Against Dragons at Rodney Parade, he contributed a 74th minute score to the squad’s six-try victory (42-28), meanwhile, his second-half touchdown against Bath in the EPCR Challenge Cup helped to ensure a draw (19-19), maintaining the Club’s ongoing unbeaten run.
The most decisive moment of the month for the winger though was in the 79th minute of the URC game against DHL Stormers, when centre Sione Tuipulotu poked a grubber through the South African defence, which bounced perfectly for Cancelliere to collect and dive over the whitewash for the matches’ winning score.
The try secured Glasgow Warriors a vital home win and their first ever victory over the league’s defending champions, 24-17.
On winning his award, Cancelliere, said: “I am very happy. I am first happy for the team. In January my tries were often finishing off the great efforts of the team. We’ve had a great block of ten games and the last four games were another step on our path to becoming the team we want to be.
“As a player I am always evolving, and I am enjoying having space to improve. I think I have been improving lots and I want to keep developing all the aspects of my skills.
“Thank you very much to the fans who voted for me, I hope you are enjoying the way we are playing as much as we are enjoying it.”
