Captain Steyn Voted McCrea Financial Services April Warrior of the Month!

Glasgow Warriors club captain Kyle Steyn has been named as McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month, as the Warriors prepare to travel to South Africa looking to defend top spot in the BKT United Rugby Championship standings.

The skipper led from the front across April, with his on and off-field efforts earning him over 60% of the public vote from the Warrior Nation on the club’s official Twitter channel.

Having featured in all three of the club’s fixtures across the month, Steyn was to the fore throughout, setting up George Horne’s score away to Harlequins with an incisive line break and fend on Alex Dombrandt.

He then crashed over under the posts on Plaster It Purple night at Scotstoun, scoring the third try on the stroke of half-time in a 21-10 victory over the Hollywoodbets Sharks on a night that saw the club raise over £45,000 for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

Steyn finished the month in flying fashion by diving over for a brace away to Zebre Parma, running in from halfway off a counter-attack for his first before finishing off a flowing team move for his second, bonus-point securing score to help his side move top of the league after 15 rounds of competition.

“I’ve loved coming back into the building after being in camp for the Six Nations,” Steyn told glasgowwarriors.org.

“We’ve had some big games and been playing some good rugby, and I’ve loved getting my hands on the ball and getting involved. The team has been in great form and everyone is in a great place right now.

“Plaster It Purple night was an awesome experience to be a part of. It’s my favourite event of the year, and to get a win on such a special night against a tough opponent is right up there for me.

“These games coming up, too, they’re the ones you want to be involved in as a player. We’re top of the standings but we know there’s a mammoth challenge lying in store in South Africa against two top sides also chasing the playoffs. The boys are feeling good and looking forward to being on tour together, so now the onus is on us to go out and perform.”

Steyn also earns a donation to his chosen charity courtesy of McCrea Financial Services as part of the award win, with the winger selecting Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity as the beneficiary of the award; a current charity partner of McCrea.

“They’re the most inspiring organisation you could wish to partner with,” said Steyn.

“The way everyone there carries themselves – from patients to staff to the families – is so brilliant, and the work the team at the hospital do to make everyone feel as uplifted as possible is inspirational to everyone at the club.”
