With the Scottish football lower league shutdown extending into a second month, we were unable to present Partick Thistle with a McCrea Mortgages Player of the Month award for February 2021.

Alternatively, Thistle fans were able to vote from a selection of sensational goals from the past to crown our McCrea Mortgages February Goal of the Month award, after an intensive voting period.

The final saw two memorable goals pitted together, Chris Erskine’s stunning strike against Airdrieonians from February 2013 went up against Stephen O’Donnell’s scintillating team goal against Dundee United in February 2015. After a day of voting, it was O’Donnell’s goal which was the clear winner in the eyes of the Thistle faithful.

Thistle travelled to the City of Discovery in February 2015, looking for their first victory at Tannadice in 21 years. With ten minutes remaining of the first half Jags goalkeeper Paul Gallacher rolled the ball out to Kallum Higginbotham on the right-hand side of the pitch. Higginbotham scooped the ball forward to the advancing O’Donnell who flicked the ball down the line into the path of Jags striker Lyle Taylor. An audacious backheel from Taylor presented the ball into the path of O’Donnell, a dummy allowed the full back to open up space on his left, completely fooling the United defence, before he curled a majestic strike into the back of the net. A Ryan McGowan own goal later in the first half sealed the 2-0 Tayside discovery as Thistle ended the Tannadice barren run.

Collecting the award earlier this month, Stephen O’Donnell said: “I’m delighted to receive this award. The goal that I scored against Dundee United was a great time in a very good side and a time in my career that I look back on fondly. It was a great team performance that day and a great team goal. I managed to show my strengths, open up my legs and shank it into the top corner but I’ll take it! Thank you very much to every Thistle fan who voted for me.”
