Tennents’ Sixes success is McCrea Mortgages January Moment of the Month
With no Thistle games played last month, we were unable to present a McCrea Mortgages Player of the Month award for January 2021.
Instead, Thistle fans submitted their nominations for our special McCrea Mortgages January Moment of the Month award before voting over a number of days to crown the winner.
A very tense final round of voting on the Partick Thistle Twitter account and the clubs website saw the lead change hands on a number of occasions. Kris Doolan’s four goals against Hamilton were favoured on our Twitter poll while the Tennents’ Sixes success scooped more of the votes on the club site. After counting all the votes, Thistle’s Tennents’ Sixes victory in January 1993 edged it and was voted the McCrea Mortgages Moment of the Month award.
The Tennents’ Sixes was an indoor six-a-side football tournament held on an annual basis between 1984 and 1993, featuring full strength squads throughout the tournament. Clubs from the 1992/93 Premier Division participated across two days with Thistle topping their group before edging out St Johnstone in the semi-finals. A thrilling final against Airdrieonians saw Paul McLaughlin’s hat-trick, aided by a timely strike from Davie Irons, ensure the trophy went to Maryhill where it remains to this day!
Collecting the award on behalf of the Tennents’ Sixes squad, Gerry Britton said: “The Tennents’ Sixes was a terrific tournament to play in and always makes me smile when I think about it. I reckon all the fans who attended the two days back in January 1993 will have enjoyed it just as much as the players did. A lot of the squad still keep in touch to this day, although sadly some are no longer with us. The list of the final eight moments for January brought back a lot of brilliant Thistle memories and the thanks of everyone go to the team at McCrea for allowing us to run this alternative award.”
